Step-by-step setup guide + copy-paste prompt

Honest note: rules automation plus Klaviyo's product AI for segments on eligible plans. The brand is large (1M+ profiles) and used professional services for migration—copy the flow pattern, not the scale. Vendor-reported QoQ lift.

Prerequisites

  • Klaviyo account with ecommerce integration live.
  • Klaviyo SMS set up (sender, compliance forms, US 10DLC if texting the US).
  • Double opt-in for SMS consent.
  • Decision to turn off legacy SMS/reviews tools after cutover to avoid double messages.

Step-by-step setup

Step 1. Confirm email abandoned cart first. Build or fix an email-only abandoned cart (Flows → Create flow → Abandoned cart). First delay 2–4 hours; include filter Placed Order zero times since starting this flow.

Step 2. Add one SMS on a consent split. In that flow, after the first delay (must be within 48 hours for US abandoned-cart SMS), add a Conditional split: If someone can or cannot receive marketing → Person cannot receive → SMS marketing. On the No path (they *can* receive SMS), add SMS. Keep one SMS per recipient for abandoned cart. Leave quiet hours on. Rejoin paths after the SMS.

Step 3. Add win-back and browse flows. From the Flow Library, add browse abandonment and a win-back flow for lapsed buyers. Prefer separate email vs SMS welcome flows (subscribers opt in separately).

Step 4. Optional: Klaviyo Reviews request flow. If you use Klaviyo Reviews, Flows → Create flow, search Review request, use the Ready to review template, edit copy, Review and turn on → Live.

Step 5. Segment by channel affinity. Create a segment of profiles engaged in the last 90 days who prefer email (opened/clicked email, little SMS engagement). Send most campaigns there instead of blasting SMS-preferring users with email-heavy creative.

Step 6. Use Segments AI only as a helper. If your plan includes it, try a plain-language segment prompt for a daily campaign audience, then verify the definition before sending.

Easier: let your AI do it

Klaviyo has no official one-click Claude/ChatGPT/Grok connector we could confirm for building flows end-to-end. Draft copy with the prompt below, then build flows in Klaviyo's editor (Klaviyo also has its own AI features inside the product on eligible plans).

What success looks like

Consented shoppers get a single timely SMS; others get email only. Flows drive a larger share of attributed revenue versus your baseline (the brand cited 56% from flows). No double texts from an old SMS vendor.

Common issues & fixes

  • SMS not sending: missing consent, 10DLC pending, or quiet hours.
  • Two abandoned-cart systems: disable Shopify/old-provider cart emails/SMS.
  • More than one SMS in cart flow: remove extras for US compliance.

Optional: Maintenance

  • Monthly: audit SMS consent sources.
  • Quarterly: refresh win-back offer.
