Honest note: rules automation, not AI. Results are vendor-published for a digital-downloads WooCommerce store. One clean abandoned-cart automation beats a dozen half-built ones.
Prerequisites
- ActiveCampaign account (Plus or higher recommended for full ecommerce history).
- WooCommerce 3.0+ store.
- API URL and Key from ActiveCampaign Settings (gear) → Developer → API Access.
Step-by-step setup
Step 1. Connect WooCommerce. In ActiveCampaign: Settings → Integrations → Add an Integration → WooCommerce, enter the store root URL, Connect, authorize, Done. In WordPress: Plugins → Add New, install ActiveCampaign for WooCommerce, Activate. Paste API URL/Key on the plugin Connection tab → Update Settings. Set abandoned-cart wait (for example 1 hour) under Store Settings → Update Settings. On Plus+, run Historical Sync if offered.
Step 2. Create the abandoned-cart automation. Automations → Create an automation → Start from Scratch. Add a start trigger → E-commerce → Abandons cart. Choose your store; optionally filter by product/category/cart value. Keep Runs appropriate for repeat abandoners.
Step 3. Send one strong email. Add Sending → Send an email. Create the campaign and insert the Abandoned cart content block (products + return-to-checkout link). Keep a single email first (the case used one); add a second only after the first performs.
Step 4. Add a Goal so buyers exit. In the automation (or related offer automations) add a Goal that completes when Makes a purchase / order completes, so buyers stop getting the offer path.
Step 5. Schedule two weekly campaigns. Campaigns → create template-based emails for blog/products twice a week. Keep them separate from the automation.
Step 6. Optional Conversations + dashboard. Enable Conversations for site chat if you want. Review revenue under ActiveCampaign's ecommerce / reports views by campaign and automation.
Easier: let your AI do it
ActiveCampaign has an official Remote MCP connector for Claude.
Step 1. In ActiveCampaign click Settings (gear) → Developer, copy the Remote MCP URL (needs ActiveCampaign branding on).
Step 2. In Claude open Settings → Customize → Connectors, search ActiveCampaign, Connect to Claude, paste Server URL, Connect, sign in.
Step 3. Ask Claude to draft tags/emails; still build or confirm the automation canvas in ActiveCampaign (it also has an AI prompt bar under Automations).
What success looks like
Abandoners get one clear recovery email; purchasers stop getting the cart offer. Email's share of sales is visible in reports. Compare automation revenue mix to your baseline (the case said cart was ~30% of automation revenue).
Common issues & fixes
- No abandon trigger: WooCommerce plugin not connected or wait time not reached.
- Empty product block: abandoned-cart block missing from the email.
- Buyers still get offers: Goal not configured or wrong purchase condition.
Optional: Maintenance
- Monthly: check Ecommerce Dashboard; pause weak campaigns.
- Quarterly: refresh cart email creative.
