> Cost: Paid. ActiveCampaign starts at $15 a month (Starter, billed annually, 1,000 contacts); most of what this guide uses needs Plus ($49) or higher, and texting is a paid add-on. 14-day free trial, no card.
Honest note: Two parts, and only one is AI. The newsletter and reporting step is genuine AI: ActiveCampaign's Active Intelligence analyzes your past sends and drafts the email. The lead-scoring and one-to-one sequence is rules-based (points and tags). The numbers are vendor-published and do not line up: the headline says 2x open rates, the table says 28% to 39% (about 1.4x); the campaign build time fall from 6 to 2.5 hours is 58% (checks); "30 to 40% more clients" has no baseline; the company says leads with 25+ points convert 2.5 to 3 times better than low-scored ones, which shows scoring ranks leads, not that the sequence causes the sale. The reactivation numbers (14 to 18% re-engage, 3 to 5% of those book) work out to roughly 10 to 36 meetings on a quarterly list of 2,500 to 4,000 (my arithmetic), with no revenue given; the $60,000 of appointments belonged to one client medical practice, not the company. Open rates are inflated by email privacy features, so judge by clicks and booked calls. Medical or patient lists need consent and privacy care.
Prerequisites
- An ActiveCampaign account; Active Intelligence has limits on Starter and Plus and fuller access on Pro and Enterprise, so check what your plan includes.
- At least a few months of sent campaigns (Active Intelligence analyzes your last 365 days of sends).
- A Brand Kit filled in (Active Intelligence menu → Create a Brand Kit).
- A lead magnet or gated download, and a person who will send the one-to-one emails.
Step-by-step setup
Step 1. Ask the AI what already works. Click the Active Intelligence icon, and ask: *Analyze the last 12 email campaigns. Identify patterns in open rate, click rate and booked calls by topic, persona and send time. Recommend 3 campaign themes.* The page's own prompt is nearly this. Treat clicks and conversions as the signal, not opens.
Step 2. Draft the newsletter. In the same chat, give it the blog post, up to three outside links, what did not work, and your template, and ask for a draft with subject-line options. Use Edit in campaign designer to adjust, send a test with Send test, and read every line before sending. The company's newsletter has one featured post, three outside resources and one call to action.
Step 3. Score your leads. Tag people by what they download so follow-up matches (for example SEO dashboard tag). Give points for actions: the page's starter framework is 5 for page views, 10 for downloading a lead magnet, and 15 to 20 for filling in a contact form or booking a call (the page's suggestion, not a measured setting). I did not verify ActiveCampaign's click path for adding score rules, so use ActiveCampaign's help article "Adjust a score based on website visits and page views".
Step 4. Start the one-to-one sequence. At 25 points the company's leads enter an email sequence that appears to come from the founder's inbox. In ActiveCampaign, Automations (left menu) → Create an automation → Start from scratch → Add a start trigger with a trigger that listens for your score tag or the point threshold, then add short plain emails and a task for a person to reply. ActiveCampaign has an article, "How to send 1:1 sales emails with automation".
Step 5. Reactivate quietly. Once a quarter, ask Active Intelligence to build a segment of contacts with no engagement in 90 days and draft a 3-email re-engagement automation (its overview shows that prompt style). Send only to people who consented to email, review the draft, then Activate.
Easier: let your AI do it. ActiveCampaign publishes a remote MCP address (Settings (gear) → Developer → Remote MCP URL) that you can add to Claude as a connector (Customize → Connectors). I did not verify which actions it can take, so keep approval on for every write. ActiveCampaign's own Active Intelligence (icon above the search bar, or the ActiveCampaign logo for the home page) can also build a first draft of an automation from a typed prompt, which you then review and click Activate.
What success looks like
The AI chat gives you a clear comparison of your past campaigns, you send a newsletter drafted from it, and test leads who reach your threshold get a personal email. After a few cycles compare your build time, clicks and booked calls with the numbers you noted before.
Common issues & fixes
- The AI answers are generic: make sure Brand Kit is filled in and reference specific past campaigns by typing @ in the prompt.
- No leads reach the threshold: lower it, or review which actions earn points.
- Reactivation emails bounce or get complaints: drop contacts that bounced and honor unsubscribes.
Optional: Maintenance
- Weekly: ask the AI for last week's top clicks and update the next newsletter.
- Quarterly: rerun the dormant-contact segment.
- Every 60 days: ask which scored leads became customers and adjust the points.
Copy-paste prompt
Paste this into Active Intelligence (or any AI chat with your campaign export).
Analyze my last 12 email campaigns. Identify patterns in click rate and booked calls by topic, audience segment and send time (treat open rate as unreliable). Recommend 3 campaign themes for next quarter. Then using the best-performing campaign as a template, draft a newsletter with one featured blog post [BLOG LINK], three outside resources [LINKS], one call to action [CTA], and give me 10 subject lines (educational, urgent, curiosity-driven).Sources
