Step-by-step setup guide

> Cost: Paid. Acuity starts at $16 a month (annual). The story uses Enterprise (quoted). You can copy the main idea on Standard or Premium.

Honest note: Rules, not AI. The "about 95%" is the owner's estimate in an Acuity-published interview, on an Enterprise plan with an onboarding specialist. The story hid start times with custom CSS; the Acuity help center documents a simpler built-in way (list your exact start times), which is what this guide uses. I could not verify which plans include client accounts, so check on the pricing page before you rely on them.

Prerequisites

  • An Acuity Scheduling account with your appointment types and availability set.
  • Your scheduler page or embed live on your website.
  • A rule for when clients may reschedule or cancel (for example 24 hours before).

Step-by-step setup

Step 1. Let clients manage their own bookings. Clients sign up from your scheduler (Sign up, top right, email and password) and log in with Log in; their Appointments page lists past and upcoming visits and lets them cancel and reschedule when you allow it. Make sure Client login is not hidden: it is one of the items you can switch off in the scheduling page settings. Set what clients may change under Availability → Global scheduling limits (rescheduling and cancelling limits).

Step 2. Offer only the start times you want. In Availability, enter specific start times instead of a time range, separated by commas (for example 8 AM, 10 AM, 12 PM, 2 PM). You can mix them with ranges, such as 11 AM, 12 PM, 2 PM - 4 PM. To change spacing for everything instead, click Availability → Global scheduling limits → Start time intervals, choose Automatically, Every 30 minutes, or Every and a number of minutes, then Save.

Step 3. Test as a client. Open your scheduler in a private window, create a test client account, book, reschedule, and cancel. Check the confirmation and reminder emails.

What success looks like

Clients change their own appointments, and your inbox has far fewer "can you move my appointment" emails. Compare the count over the same weeks before and after.

Common issues & fixes

  • A time is missing: Acuity's help article "Fix availability issues and missing appointment times" has the checklist; check start time intervals and appointment-type limits first.
  • Extra branches or cities: Enterprise adds multiple scheduler instances in one dashboard; lower plans use up to 6 or 36 calendars.
  • CSS tweaks: custom CSS is Premium or higher; try the built-in start times first.

Optional: Maintenance

  • Each season, review your start times and cancellation window.
